ZONING INSPECTOR (Part-time)
DEPARTMENT: Planning & Zoning
LOCATION: 417 Main Street, Huron, OH 44839
HOURS: 24 hours/week - flexible schedule (set schedule TBD)
HOURLY RATE: $23.00
GENERAL PURPOSE: The Zoning Inspector works under the supervision of the Planning and Zoning Manager and shall assist the Planning and Zoning Manager ensuring that all zoning-related matters within the City conform to the established Municipal Planning and Zoning Code, International Property Maintenance Code and Codified Ordinances of the City of Huron.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Reasonable accommodations, as prescribed by the Americans with Disabilities Act, may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.
- Studies, reviews, applies, and enforces the City of Huron Planning and Zoning Code, International Property Maintenance Code, and various other codes within the Huron Codified Ordinances.
- Conducts plan reviews on all Zoning applications, documenting findings, and rendering approval or denial of the Zoning Permit.
- Conducts various inspections including zoning setback/compliance, transient rental, and general zoning and property maintenance violations. Maintains complete and accurate records of all plan reviews, inspections, case notes, violation cases and nuisance abatements within the city’s software program.
- Conducts research and responds to inquiries and/or meets with property owners to communicate in common terms, complex zoning regulations, procedures, compliance requirements and/or remedy actions.
- Prepares case files and appears in court when necessary to address unresolved code violation cases.
- Coordination with other departments including, but not limited to: Building , Fire, Engineering, Law, and Police.
- On occasion, may be required to attend evening Planning Commission/Design Review and Building and Zoning Appeals public meetings to assist the Planning & Zoning Manager.
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or Vocational School degree; and
- Equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the necessary skills and abilities to perform the job.
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License;
- Working knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Office. Training to be provided on the Zoning Software program.
- Ability to interact with the public in a professional and tactful manner when dealing with difficult situations.
RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE: Experience in construction/construction related trades; municipal government/public administration; criminal justice or inspection related processes.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to operate tools or controls, reach with arms and/or hands, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities include but are not limited to, close, color, and peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The mental demands of this position include varied degrees of occasional stress.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to undesirable weather conditions including, but not limited to, extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind. The noise level in the work environment is varied and may include undesirable noises, such as grinding, grating, or extreme loudness.
