Transient Rental Registration Program
The purpose of the transient rental registration program, which includes annual inspections and certification, is to set standards that address public safety issues while providing a revenue source to offset costs related to public safety and zoning enforcement efforts.Program regulations and requirements are found within the Building Code- Chapter 1369-Transient Rentals. It is recommended that applicants review this code to be aware of all requirements associated with this program. Check with your HOA to verify if the renting of the property is allowed under your bylaws and/or for any process they may require. The ordinance set a cap of 165 transient rental certifications within the city. As of 8-8-22, the City reached the cap and are no longer accepting NEW Applications. If you would like to be placed on the Wait List, please complete and return the Wait List Application with all required documentation. There is no fee for the wait list application. Registered Transient Rentals must renew certificates annually by submitting a renewal application, insurance certificate, and fee at least 3 weeks before the certificate expiration date. An inspection will be scheduled within 14 days from receipt. A renewal certificate is issued upon a passing inspection. If you allow your certificate to expire, the city cannot accept a renewal application, and you would no longer be able to continue to operate or advertise. No reminder notices are issued by the City.
Lodging Tax Requirement: You are required to register with Erie County to submit lodging taxes. Erie County has a 4% lodging tax on all vacation rentals within the County; they will collect the City's 3% portion as well. Frequently Asked Questions
"Transient Rental Property" means any Residential Premises, or part thereof, being utilized or otherwise made available to a transient rental guest within the City, if such premises used by or made available to a transient rental guest for a period in excess of a combined period of thirty (30) days in any calendar year. (Section 1369.98 (m))

- Contact the City of Huron, Planning & Zoning Department to confirm availability and/or application instructions.
- Check the Zoning Map to ensure the property is located within a Residential Zoning District ZONING DISTRICT MAP
- Check with your HOA declarations (if applicable) to ensure that transient rentals are allowed in your neighborhood and/or to check the process established by your HOA for compliance.

- Complete the Transient Rental Wait List Application and submit the application, with required documents to the City's Planning and Zoning Department (City of Huron, Planning & Zoning Dept., 417 Main St., Huron, OH 44839)
- Your application will be reviewed by the Zoning Inspector. If your application is complete and compliant, you will be issued a wait list number.
The annual fee is $400 per rental unit (this includes one (1) inspection) If the property fails the inspection, there is a $50 fee for each re-inspection. Annual Fees are subject to change as determined by City Council.

Within 14 days of the closing, the new owner submits a completed transfer application, required documentation, and the transfer fee of $50. An inspection will be scheduled within 14 days. Upon the passing of the inspection, a Transfer Certificate can be issued through the unexpired term of the existing Certificate.
