South Main Street Streetscape Project


SCOPE:
South Main Street is the southern gateway into the City of Huron. Home to several local shops and restaurants, South Main Street has lacked the attention it deserves over the years. The South Main Street streetscape project aims to correct that deficit through increased pedestrian and vehicle flow while expanding pedestrian space, such as sidewalks and opportunities for businesses to enhance their visibility. This includes optional outdoor dining areas.

The changes coming to South Main Street will include roadway repaving, streetscape improvements including adding a multi-use path, decorative lighting, wayfinding signage and landscaping from the intersection of US6 to Bogart Road.

The plan not only places emphasis on appropriate safety enhancements for the public, but also, it looks at public parking options, suitable land uses, and overall improvements to assist in defining the southern gateway of the City.

TIMELINE:
Beginning September 21st, 2026, the segment of South Main Street between US6 and Bogart Road will be closed to for approximately 8 weeks. Local business traffic will be maintained throughout the closure. Following the 8-week closure crews will continue on-site with only minor or periodic traffic disruptions. The project is estimated to be completed by mid-March.

TRAFFIC & PARKING:
TRAFFIC FLOW DURING CONSTRUCTION
• South Main Street from US 6 to Bogart will be closed. Local business traffic permitted. 
• North & South Bound traffic will be diverted to Bogart and Williams St. or Center St. 

• $1.38 million paid for by a bond through low-interest loans issued to the City of Huron
• $410,000 coming from the Highway Safety Improvement Program Funds
• $360,000 coming from Erie County Regional Planning Commission
